Years ago, there was a magnificent pear tree that overlooked our kitchen window. Every day I gazed out at her while I washed the dishes and the blackbird sang the sun down behind her branches. Her contours shifted with the seasons. But it wasn’t until one hard day in winter that I saw her face. I was feeling disheartened and exhausted. Having moved to a new country when my son was just 3 months old, I had no support from friends or family. I felt lost and alone. But then something happened. The limbs of the tree that I had looked at so often suddenly became the lines of a face. There she was, the Great Mother looking straight at me, smiling, her arms open wide. I’m here, she seemed to say, I’ve got you, I’ve got your back. I’ll hold you so that you can hold your child. And that changed everything.
